Dinners for 10 Recap
Dinners for Ten this past Sunday, January 24, was a great success! We had over 200 people from the St. Andrew’s family enjoying dinner with one another across Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Huntington Beach and Corona del Mar! It is our goal to create an atmosphere of fellowship and fun over food where strangers within the St. Andrew’s family can meet and become friends. We are so thankful to our hosts who opened their homes to new friends and to those who signed up to participate in this opportunity out of a willing desire to start new friendships. If you have not signed up for the February dinners, you don’t want to miss out on this wonderful experience!

Men’s Mammoth Retreat
27 men from St. Andrew’s spent this last weekend together on Mammoth Mountain. It was an intergenerational ski trip with men from their 20s to 80s. Fresh snow made for some great skiing. We stayed in 4 cabins but gathered in one for fellowship, food and a little devotion time with our new pastor, Richard Kannwischer. It was a wonderful time to connect with one another and with God as you can see from one of the guys on the trip below:
“I originally signed up for the trip to take advantage of the opportunity to meet and spend time with people whom I don’t know but see each Sunday morning but really achieved much more than that.
I really enjoyed the leadership in prayer, devotion and the meals that we cooked and shared with each other. Of course the conditions on the mountain were outstanding! Planning to meet for lunch on the mountain Friday was an excellent way to re-group on the mountain and ski together.
I am looking forward to next year’s trip!”

Urbana Missions Conference
The Haven college group returned a couple weeks ago from the Urbana Missions Conference in St. Louis, MO. We spent 5 days being challenged by the Lord through speakers and each other to live a missional lifestyle. The theme for the week was “The Word Became Flesh,” and it was a great time of fellowship and stretching for us as we grappled with issues around the world and were challenged to live an “incarnate” type of lifestyle here in the States. We look forward to continuing to meet together and explore what God’s heart is for our group, how He will continue to change us, and also what He wills us to participate in for His kingdom’s work here. We would like to say thank you to everyone who helped support us financially to get us there, and a special thanks to all the flamingo flockers! We endeavor to seek God’s heart for Newport Beach here within our St. Andrew’s family!
Peace and Grace,
-Tim Burnette
End of OC Slavery
January 11, 2010, was National Human Trafficking Awareness Day (OC 11 in Orange County). To commemorate the “OC 11” and to further educate ourselves, our congregation and our community about the tragedy of modern-day slavery, St. Andrew’s Ministry on Human Trafficking held an open-to-the-community event on January 13, 2010 – End OC Slavery.
The dinner portion of the evening program, staffed by 25+ Ministry volunteers, provided a meal and fellowship for more than 275 attendees. News articles and handouts (“Things You Can Do,” “What to Pray About,” and an information card on “Human Trafficking” from the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force) were provided to encourage conversation on the subject.
Following dinner (which filled Dierenfield Hall and part of the “House” – downstairs), attendees moved to the Sanctuary where the International Justice Mission’s (IJM) newly released DVD, At the End of Slavery – the battle for justice in our time, was shown. A presentation by Sandra Morgan, Administrator of the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force (OCHTTF), immediately followed the “film” (DVD). Ms. Morgan was joined by Shyima Hall, a human trafficking survivor (enslaved as a child, brought to the United States, and ultimately rescued out of a house in Irvine, CA). Ms. Hall’s testimony provided an emotional transition from the global perspective of human trafficking to a local and very personal one. More than 325 attended the DVD and presentations in the Sanctuary.
More than 60 of those in attendance provided their names and contact information, expressing a desire to be a part of the Ministry on Human Trafficking’s future activities. Four individuals seeking a new church to call home, indicated interest in joining the St. Andrew’s family after attending the event. And, lines of communication were opened between St. Andrew’s and several other area churches and civic groups. End OC Slavery exceeded expectations at all levels and hopefully brought a small smile to God’s lips.
Tecate Mission Trip January 2010
Last weekend’s trip to Tecate was transformational as you can see below from someone in our group. We reached and helped the people in Mirador (barrio section of homes just outside Tecate), built a shed on the ranch at Rancho La Paloma and spent time with the boys from the orphanage across the street from the ranch. It was a time of giving and receiving together. It truly was a blessing for all involved and we look forward to future trips in 2010 from our students and young adults as well as intergenerational trips with those in our St Andrew’s community.
Here is a note from Larry who had the following comments about his experience on the trip with his wife and two daughters:
“We just wanted to send a note to let you know how much we appreciate you getting us involved in the orphanage and the ranch. We keep thinking about both and we’ve realized that in addition to being a lot of fun, the experiences we’ve had there have been tremendously rewarding. We love the ranch, we love the orphanage, we love the boys, we love sharing our hearts and being able to hear other share theirs, we love what it has meant to our family and we love spending time with other great families. It’s been such a blessing, we can’t quite get our arms around it all…. we look forward to serving together, spending time together, eating tacos together and whatever else together! Thanks again for blessing our lives.”
