Meet the Staff – Ryan Longnecker

January 12th, 2009

With the Grand Opening of the Coffee Corner, we offer you a chance to get to know our new coffee shop manager, Ryan.

Who are you?
My name is Ryan Longnecker, I am a recent graduate of Vanguard University, where I studied Music Ministry. Even though my education is in Music, I primarily consider myself a minister of youth. I have a big heart for the students of this church, and youth ministry in general.

When did you first come to St. Andrew’s?
I originally came to St. Andrew’s a few years ago as a Jr. High intern under Katelyn Gregg. I also had a preexisting relationship with Dr. Melton, because of my involvement with the Music Department at Vanguard.

What do you do here?
I manage the new coffee corner at St. Andrew’s, known to our loyal customers as Standrews Coffee. Martin Diedrich helped me get started, and even helped create our own blend of coffee, exclusive to St. Andrew’s! My mission statement is simple, “Serving God, People and Coffee (in that order).”

Are you involved in any ministry outside of your job?
I still try to spend as much time with youth ministry as often as possible. I am also on staff at Bethany Bible Fellowship, in Westminster, working with the High School group.

Most memorable St. Andrew’s moment:
Once I was helping lead worship on a Saturday night with Tim Yee, and there was some sort of miscommunication after the sermon. Long story short, I ended up leading the last song with Tim’s guitar on his microphone. Because I’m well over 6″3, his guitar strap was a little short and his guitar was up at my throat, and his microphone was down at my chest. It was far from the most comfortable situation to be in, trying to lead the last song. I probably looked ridiculous with the guitar super high on my chest, and hunching over to sing into the mic.

Meet the Staff – Joan Hoover

December 15th, 2008

Who are you? I am St. Andrew’s new Receptionist and Administrative Assistant. My name is Joan Hoover, a recent widow, was married to Jim Hoover my soul mate for 26 wonderful years. I am a mother of one son, Bill Rice who is married to Tera Rice and they have two children who live in San Clemente. I am a grandmother of Catherine Rice, 3 years old and William Rice, 1 year old. Stop by my desk and I will show you pictures of my grandchildren.

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church has been the example of all Presbyterian churches and I believe this new position is a gift from God. I feel privilege to be a part of this special Staff. I just love meeting and greeting everyone that either calls or comes into the office. I am a member, Elder and Clerk of Session at San Clemente Presbyterian Church.

When did you come to St. Andrew’s? What do you do here? I worked temporarily in the Adult Education department this summer. After that, I was hired full-time as receptionist on October 1.

Are you involved in any ministries outside of your job? I partnered with my husband in leading a couples’ Covenant Group for 12 years which is still meeting twice a month. Also I belong to a Career Women’s Bible Study group. I love to walk and hike and belong to a “Walkie Talkie” group. As Clerk of Session this keeps me busy and involved with church activities.

Most Memorable St. Andrew’s Moment: On my second day as Receptionist, Shawn Reilly asked me to assist with cooking 28 pounds of roast for the church staff. I love to cook and Shawn knew I had worked for Lawry’s Foods for 22 years (and Lawry’s is known for their Prime Rib) so he thought I would be the one to help. When my friends asked me how is your job? I would tell them I am learning the job of being the Receptionist’s but also I get to cook as well! I like a good challenge. I love being here at St. Andrew’s and feel honored to be a part of this staff.

Who Are You? My name is Rachel Stone, I am wife to Gregg and mom to Riley (13) and Jessica (12) and Sophie (our dog!). I love to spend time with family and friends, cook, snow ski whenever possible, and just plain have fun.

How/when did you come to St. Andrew’s? Found St. Andrews in early 1992 when Gregg and I were looking for a church in which to marry. We were the last Saturday 4pm wedding before they started Sat evening services! I became a member in April 1993.

What do you do here? I get to be the ‘House Mom’ – overseeing the activities of the House; I plan and run the lunches for the Jr. High and High School 3 days a week. I get to work with the amazing Student Ministries staff – assisting them and hopefully positively enabling them in their ministry. I oversee and schedule the volunteers, do all the tracking of the kids involved in our Jr. High and High School and Sunday am programs.

How long have you worked here? While I have been a long time volunteer – I am one of the newest members on staff – I started working in the Student Ministries department on 10/1/08.

Are you involved in any ministries outside of your job? I had the distinct privilege of leading a covenant group for over 6 years and the last couple of years I have led small discipleship groups. My daughters and I are also involved in the Tecate Mission trips – we go for the 4th time in the last 3 years this month! We each have a World Vision child whom we support and correspond with regularly as well.

Most Memorable St. Andrew’s Moment: So many memorable moments – from times in Parent/Child with both of the girls, their time here in the preschool, from amazing Maundy Thursday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas eve services and most recently, to the awesome lunches that we are doing for the Jr. High and High School students! Most amazing moments – seeing over 350 students and adults in the “House” on 10/10, enjoying a band and great food and then more recently – over 200 High School students enjoying pizza and salad just last Thursday! A very fun moment – playing one the disciples of Baal in our VBS night last June – lots of fun and laughter in the rehearsals and the performance – and of course, Elijah, with God defeats Baal!
