Serve Day – Disneyland Calling!

Serve Day is coming on Saturday, March 27! We will be blessing our community with practical acts of service in dozens of locations around Orange County: cleaning up beaches, feeding the hungry, preparing hygiene kits for disaster relief, and many more. Since it’s inception, the goal of Serve Day has been to mobilize our church family in order to reach out together to our neighbors around us, showing people that God truly loves them and our community.

We have an exciting opportunity to invite our neighbors to join us on Serve Day as we partner with Disney’s “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” program. Disney has graciously offered us the opportunity to get 1,500 free Disneyland passes in exchange for participating in a qualified service project. How much fun is that? And, more importantly, hundreds of our neighbors who may have never stepped on our church property will be serving alongside us for the first time because of this unique opportunity.

This offer is likely to close by the end of the week so we’re encouraging you to sign up at the Disney site TODAY if you want to be eligible for a Disney pass for participating in St. Andrew’s upcoming Serve Day. We want you to invite your neighbors to sign up, too. A detailed list of project descriptions, times and other information will be posted on our Web site next week, but you don’t need to specify the exact project before signing up with Disney. Just go to the Disney site, find our project “Serve Day – March 27” and follow the instructions. First, please read this important information below regarding age requirements and restrictions:

1. You must sign up online through Disney’s website.

2. Disney requires that you must be 18 years old or older to sign up.

3. Disney requires that kids must be at least 6 years old in order to be eligible for the free Disney pass. Sorry, but no free passes for those under 6.

4. Disney requires that kids under 18 MUST be accompanied by their parent or guardian while volunteering, which means the parent must sign up a child as part of their family in order to serve and that the parent must be present with their children while serving. Sorry, but even teenagers must be with a parent or legal guardian. If you’re under 18 and want to serve, you need your parent to sign you up as a family.

5. Of course, service must be verified by St. Andrew’s after March 27, and passes aren’t guaranteed until verified. Disney has several other important eligibility requirements that you should read about by clicking here.

Our goal on Serve Day has always been to reach out to our community through acts of practical service that reveal the God we love and worship. Now we have the opportunity to serve alongside our neighbors, getting to know them better and demonstrating God’s love as we serve together and partner with Disney. Imagine all those who have never been to our worship services before but want to join us in serving the community together on Saturday, March 27. Let’s pray that God’s love will be seen not only in how we serve our community, but how we love the people we serve alongside. Sign up today!

God bless!

Serve Day Testimony

October 20th, 2009

I work with the Heritage House women during Friday Bible Studies where sometimes I teach, but mostly I am the Scheduler and Keeper of the Lists. I dropped by on Serve Day to bring some toiletries and see what was going on. The play yard for the children had been raked even. The big potholes were gone. The old fence had been torn down and an attractive see through shortie fence had been erected, allowing so much more light into the space, and making it visible to the moms and staff from the driveway. The play equipment had been painted and looked brand new. One of the women was painting the new little fence with her daughter as something fun to do together. The sounds of the buzz saw were silent and the sizzling of hamburgers and the rustling of tablecloths being laid out signaled the end of the day and the dinner celebration.

Some of the Moms were chatting under a tree and I joined them. I knew them all from the Bible Study, but that afternoon there was time to just sit and chat. Tamara told me about her five year anniversary for being clean from heroin coming up on November 4. She told me she’d been using drugs since she was 13. Grew up in Newport Beach, got her first car when she was 16. But she was always rebellious, she told me. There were problems at home, her dad was using drugs, the marriage broke up and somewhere in there she got lost. One day, not too long ago when she was sitting in prison, she took a good look around and decided that that was not the life she wanted to have. She knew there was a better life out there and she was going to make whatever decisions she had to in order to get there. There have been bumps along the way. Just recently, she told me, she got a violation for fishing without a license that got her 30 days in jail. The point is, you have to learn to follow the rules. All the rules – the boundaries of life that keep us from falling into the gutter. She put herself into Heritage House and is working the program diligently now. She is committed to getting her life on track and raising her children. She’s a lucky one. She has a mom to help her when she gets out.

Working with Heritage House is like being on the front lines of a battle field, ministering to the wounded. We can only help the ones who come to us and some choose not to come, but all the women benefit as those who enter back into their homes after studying God’s Word seek to employ the principles of prayer and exercise their faith in their relationships with the other women. They are praying for each other now. They pray for the staff. They pray for the girls who have graduated and moved on. Through St. Andrew’s church ladies and men, the Heritage House is becoming a house of prayer and a place where the Spirit of the Lord resides. I feel honored to be a part of what God is doing there. We need drivers, and cooks and people who can help out from time to time. We’d love to have some substitute Bible teachers. Call Laura Johnson to volunteer. It’s a great team.

Serve Day at Heritage House

October 9th, 2009

Some of the Serve Day team headed to Heritage House to rebuild a playground set and do clean up and repairs. The girls were appreciative and the kids loved it!

If you would like to continue to serve this ministry, there are opportunities. The Monday Night Bible Study at Heritage House is increasing in size weekly and needs more women to disciple and pray for the women in transition. For more info, contact Laura Johnson, 949.574.2268.

Serve Day at Teen Challenge

October 8th, 2009

One of the off-campus projects for Serve Day this fall was to partner with a local ministry, Teen Challenge, to throw a block party in their Santa Ana neighborhood. For the block party, Teen Challenge collected clothing and food donations to provide to their neighbors. St. Andrew’s represented at the event with 28 people who came to help distribute the donations and provide and serve a BBQ to the 250+ community members in attendance. Teen Challenge drew in the large crowd with music, a message from a local pastor and a call to invite their community to accept Jesus in their lives. Many came forward in response to the invitation and received prayer. St. Andrew’s and Teen Challenge were successful in providing love and material needs to the community of Santa Ana. Check out these great pictures from the day!

“It was a blessing for both my husband and me to serve with a wonderful team of St. Andrew’s volunteers that included couples, young adults, singles and whole families – all who served tirelessly and selflessly from set-up to clean-up. I was especially touched by the servant’s heart demonstrated by 12-year-old Jordan Wicks, who wouldn’t accept anything to eat himself until he knew all those from the community had been fed. Together we were all privileged to serve along side our ministry partners at Teen Challenge and to experience first-hand what God is doing through them to reach the lost for Christ.” – Susan Pope

Serve Day Success!

October 6th, 2009

Our recent Serve Day on Saturday, October 3, was a huge success! Over 400 volunteers participated in activities on and off campus to serve our surrounding communities.

On campus, we made blankets and cookies for needy families, made paintings as graduation gifts for the women of Heritage House, knit and crocheted items and collected children’s book donations for children in need, collected school supplies for orphans in Kenya, held a seminar on human trafficking awareness, and delivered lunch to laborers in the community.

Off campus, we visited seniors in a local nursing home, helped throw a block party at Teen Challenge in Santa Ana, assisted with donations at the Orange County Rescue Mission, visited the Charle Street men’s recovery facility, picked up trash in neighborhoods and handed out fliers to the community for our next community outreach project “Community Shredding and Recycling Day.” We did cleanup and construction of a playground at Heritage House. Some of us even ran a 5k with our neighbors to benefit Newport Harbor Heritage High School and worked on building projects at the school.

Stay tuned this week for more Serve Day photos!
