God on the Move: Santa Barbara, CA

September 3rd, 2010

In August we attended the wedding of another precious granddaughter–this time, Alexis Ary to Nathan Thaler. They graced their ceremony with several Hebrew traditions, e.g. the sharing of a glass of wine and the breaking the glass, after which we all shouted “Mazeltov”. The wedding was held in the Sunken Gardens on the grounds of the beautiful and historic Courthouse in Santa Barbara. What a great blessing it has been to be able to see two granddaughters married within weeks of each other. God has surely been on the move with us on our “Summer Road Trips” this year.

God on the Move: Kona, Hawaii

September 1st, 2010

We went back to our little grass shack in Keauhou-Kona, Hawaii
We like to be with all the kanes and wahinis that we’ve come to know
We can hear the guitars playing on the beach at Honaunau
We can hear the Hawaiians saying: “come on in, take off your coat and we’ll have a big luau”.

You can see God’s glorious hand in all the beauty
Of every flower, fruit and creature on this land and in the sea
Underneath we’re Californians and we’re happy to be, but still we are charmed by a coconut tree
And we’ll come back to our little grass shack in Keauhou-Kona, Hawaii
Where the humuhumunukunukuapua’as go swimming by.

God on the Move: North Rim Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion

August 31st, 2010

On our summer road trip, my family (Scott, Diane, Carly 10, Chloe 9) visited three national parks; The North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Bryce National Park. It took us a little over a week and the message going through my mind the entire time was “WOW! How could anyone think that all this was created by accident?” We have a wonderfully creative GOD who loves us so much that He took the time to create such awe inspiring places to remind us of that simple fact.

God on the Move: Canada and Michigan

August 30th, 2010

The Rhodes family experienced God at Niagara Falls, Canada and also in the wheat fields in Michigan.

In Romans 1:20, Paul says His creation reveals enough of Him to make a major difference in our lives.

Standing next to the volume of water falling at Niagara, or driving a 35’-wide combine harvester in the vastness of hundreds of acres of wheat, it’s impossible to not see God on the move!

God on the Move: San Diego, CA

August 26th, 2010

In July, my daughter, her family and I attended the Renovare Family Retreat in San Diego. The Retreat was based on the book, “Longing For God” by Gayle Beebe and Richard Foster. Renovare means Renewal in Jesus Christ. We were all very inspired with the talks given by Chris Webb, President of Renovare, and Richard Foster, founder of Renovare. We had some wonderful spiritual times together, with a lot of good discussions as a family.

Also, we did some sightseeing around San Diego. We toured the Aircraft Carrier, the Midway, docked in San Diego Harbor. All in all, our Summer Road Trip was a perfect way to spend time together and be spiritually inspired by the Retreat.

God on the Move: San Antonio, TX

August 25th, 2010

I worshiped at First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio two weeks ago. It was good to see where you were last, Rich. What a gorgeous sanctuary with incredible stained-glass windows – the first Protestant church in San Antonio. I couldn’t believe I forgot to take out the newsletter that was folded in my Nook. I had walked the 8 blocks or so from my downtown hotel and had carefully taken the Highlights newsletter, but I didn’t remember it until I was nearly back at the hotel! Must have been the heat (not old age surely)!
