Tecate Pics and Testimony
Two vans departed from St. Andrew’s on Thursday afternoon bound for Tecate, Mexico. We crossed the border and were welcomed into Rancho La Paloma. We had wonderful worship and devotions. Friday morning we had the boys from the orphanage, San Juan Bosco, and played soccer with the boys. We also had a great VBS craft with Bible verses in Spanish they could for their project. We sang some worship songs in Spanish and played musical chairs. The boys really enjoyed their time at the ranch. The orphanage was randomly selected for a government check a couple years back. It passed with flying colors and is now used as the example for all orphanages in Mexico. Last week, Mexican authorities found four little girls in the hills and brought them to Rancho San Juan Bosco. Up until now, the orphanage has only housed boys, but they welcomed the girls with open arms and are trying to come up with ways to support them. After lunch, we headed out to a local community, El Mirador, and attempted to see a family that St. Andrew’s had built a home for recently. Unfortunately, the family was away visiting family. However, God is good and provided ways for us to serve. We set up a barbeque and grilled hot dogs for the construction workers paving a road, store owners, and kids that came to play games we had brought. We hung out for a couple hours in the community and loved on people. Once again we had great worship and devotion time in the evening. Saturday morning before we headed home, we invited the kids from the orphanage over to swim. The joy that they had playing together was almost surreal. They were unbelievably grateful and very gracious. Right before our departure we had a piñata. The kids loved it and once again displayed their ability to share and play well with one another.

Extending the Tecate Family
There are some amazing things happening in Tecate. Our trip in June clearly showed our team God’s faithfulness and his ability to provide for the orphans of Rancho San Juan Bosco. Our team was moved by God’s provision and by his very clear voice on the work that needs to be done there. There is an immediate need to refurbish a building to house girls. Previously, this was an orphanage exclusively for boys, but needs have recently changed. There are very few facilities in Mexico where brothers and sisters can be housed together. This new facility will allow siblings to remain together as a part of the larger San Juan Bosco family. Our families (and hopefully yours, too) will be returning in July to work on the girls living area.

Adrienne Carter and Kelly Reilly helping the boys create their craft. We printed a variety of verses in Spanish and they painted and decorated plaques with the verse.

Here is the finished craft. The kids made extras, which we took and handed out to the people in a very poor village called El Mirador.

One of the impromptu special moments: singing worship songs together. One of the orphanage’s leaders lead the kids in Spanish and Brandon Muchow and Jason Valverde led us in English. Talk about making a joyful noise unto the Lord!

These are 3 of the 6 orphan girls they found wandering in the mountains the day before we arrived. We bought them dolls and made sure they had clothes before we left. We’ll be returning next month to work on a girls dorm for them. They are the first girls at the orphanage.
Die to Themselves: Tecate
70+ St. Andrew’s Attendees Die (to themselves) in Tecate, Mexico:
Last weekend, over 70 of our best and brightest went to serve down in Tecate, Mexico, April 8-11, for a Spring Work Project. Made up of various generations from St. Andrew’s, it was a great time of serving, sharing and growing as a community of Christ together. Various projects included 2 house buildings, Rancho San Juan Bosco Boys orphanage ministry, and VBS ministry to the community of El Mirador. Throughout the weekend, students and adults alike were privileged to serve the Lord in such capacities and challenge themselves to live out Philippians chapter 2. The theme for the weekend was “One in Death, One in Love, One in Life,” and the team t-shirts themselves even reflected this theme of unity in serving Christ by imitating his love for the poor and oppressed. Overall, this trip was a huge blessing not only to the quaint (and very safe) community of Tecate, but even moreso to those who went on the trip. Led by Jessica Ludwig, Shawn Reilly and Tim Burnette, as well as various other staff members, this trip was a huge success in teaching those involved to die to themselves for the sake of others and a great way to challenge the complacency that can so easily impart itself upon “comfortable” Americans. Keep an eye out for future trips down to Tecate as a way to join in the mission of the church to serve the Lord around the globe, and as a chance to grab your family and pull them in to a life of serving Christ!
Peace and Blessings.
Love,
The Tecate Planning Team

Tecate Mission Trip January 2010
Last weekend’s trip to Tecate was transformational as you can see below from someone in our group. We reached and helped the people in Mirador (barrio section of homes just outside Tecate), built a shed on the ranch at Rancho La Paloma and spent time with the boys from the orphanage across the street from the ranch. It was a time of giving and receiving together. It truly was a blessing for all involved and we look forward to future trips in 2010 from our students and young adults as well as intergenerational trips with those in our St Andrew’s community.
Here is a note from Larry who had the following comments about his experience on the trip with his wife and two daughters:
“We just wanted to send a note to let you know how much we appreciate you getting us involved in the orphanage and the ranch. We keep thinking about both and we’ve realized that in addition to being a lot of fun, the experiences we’ve had there have been tremendously rewarding. We love the ranch, we love the orphanage, we love the boys, we love sharing our hearts and being able to hear other share theirs, we love what it has meant to our family and we love spending time with other great families. It’s been such a blessing, we can’t quite get our arms around it all…. we look forward to serving together, spending time together, eating tacos together and whatever else together! Thanks again for blessing our lives.”

Tecate Trip 2009
We had a great time in Tecate! We had 25 people go down to Tecate and stay at Rancho La Paloma. The team sanded and painted one of the fences at Rancho La Paloma. We invited the the boys from Rancho San Juan Bosco over to the Ranch, where the team loved on them by throwing them a birthday party where we played pin the tail on the donkey, soccer, kick ball and baseball. We went into the community of El Mirador and delivered needed supplies and prayed families for in the community. God moved in amazing ways through our team this week in Tecate.
Tecate Mission Trip
This past weekend, our team of 70 had an incredible time in Tecate building a home for a needy family, ministering to orphans and impoverished communities and accomplishing many needed projects with our ministry partners.
It was amazing to see children, teenagers and adults of all ages build a home from scratch on two days!
Another group did crafts, bible stories and played games with orphans and needy children. We handed out clothes to neighborhood families in desperate need. The gospel was shared in word and in deed!
The morning devotions and evening worship set the tone for the weekend as we focused on God’s goodness and how each of us is privileged to share His goodness to a needy world.
How do I sum up the weekend? Generations connected, we served the poor, our lives and the lives of our Mexican friends were changed. All of this happened through our Lord Jesus Christ. Come join us Spring 2009 for the next Tecate trip as Jesus leads us to serve the poor in Mexico.
